Getting Started on a Crazy Quilt Block

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

How do I approach creating a crazy quilt block? Deciding how your block is going to look ahead of time is kind of tricky! Some of it is fairly straight forward, e.g., you need to decide the color palette, the overall look of the block, and the general style of the quilt you are planning to make. There are a lot of choices to consider such as the number of blocks, style, color, detail, and the personality. Yes, personality! Sometimes crazy quilts take on a mind of their own! The quilt I am working on now started as just 4 or 5 blocks, but now there are 9! Anyway, after the color choices are made and the first block foundation is pieced, I then lay a number of laces and trims on the block to start to get the feel of the block look that I want. Usually three laces/trims are about right. Then, I decide if it needs something else other than the usual embroidery. Details such as photo transfers, appliqués, handkerchiefs and those special little one of a kind objects can make all the difference in the look of the block. I like lots of embroidery but I also love the embellishment process. I try not to get too wrapped up in deciding ahead of time what needs to go where; instead, I keep adding details until it looks done. OK, so it’s not so straight forward after all; but the process is what makes it fun. Enjoy!

Crazy Quilt Sisters

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

My favorite class to teach is my hand crazy quilt sisters’ class.  It’s a group of ladies that get together once a month to learn new techniques for crazy quilting.  The group is small but amazing!  We talk and share and laugh and enjoy just a few short hours together each month.  We always have a great time together not only to work on our ongoing crazy quilt but to enjoy each other’s company.  I usually share three or four ideas to work on and always get more back from the ladies than I give them.  Thanks to my special group for always showing up and supporting me!

Heaven’s Quilts Updated Website

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Thank you so much for visiting Heaven’s Quilts today. We have been gradually updating our website and have added this Blog where we look forward to telling you about our latest products under development, what’s new in our store, or just sharing with you some cool new ideas on how to create that special quilt project.  As many of you know, my favorite style of quilting is creating Crazy Quilts. It doesn’t matter whether I am creating a table runner, a book cover, a pincushion or just a beautiful wall-hanging, I can find a way to use crazy quilting techniques. Recently, I had the opportunity to share my passion for this quilting style at an afternoon tea sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. It was such fun talking about the history of crazy quilting, look at some turn of the century crazy quilts from the museum collection, and show some of my own creations — like this one:

As I come up with new ideas in this area, I look forward to sharing my ideas with you. So check back every now and then to find out what’s new in my quilting workshop  — actually what used to be the living room, but “workshop” sounds so much better!!
